A Visit to BlackHare Letterpress Studio

BlackHare Studio

BlackHare Studio 1

I went for a very exciting visit to BlackHare Studio last week for some lessons in letterpress. My goal was to produce some personal business cards. With the help of VGreen Design, I came out with hundreds of cards and a handful of one-of-a-kind monotype letterpress prints.

The studio was located in a downtown strip and was fully equipped with several large letterpress units. I printed my business cards on a small, but effective table top press.

I blind debossed my logo into my cards first using custom photo polymer plates. I printed my cards three-up on a page to save time with printing.

I hand set all of the letters and numbers on my card…three times…using a modern sans serif typeface (Spartan).

I printed the rest of my information with a blue-green ink.

The cards were then cut down to the standard 3.5″ x 2″ size using a large papercutter.

After my cards were finished, we printed a handful of letterpress monotypes using an old U.S. Feed sign and some brayers on one of the large Vandercook presses.

I then dove into BlackHare’s collection of orphan type drawers to create an original letterpress poster for Surfwaco.

If you’re a fan of printmaking and graphic design, I suggest a visit to a letterpress shop. There are a lot of great ones across the country including, one of my favorites, The Firecracker Press in St. Louis, MO.

Warehouse printmaking – In progress #1

We had a great cutting session last Thursday at the warehouse. Our playlist filled the empty space nicely. I started a new block and Dan finished one he was working on. Below are our blocks. I will continue working on mine and Dan will start a new project. We hope to get back out there for another session soon. We’ll post our progress on the blocks afterwards.

Warehouse printmaking

Empty warehouse
We’re hitting the empty warehouse next door for some woodcut magic. This month and possibly next, we will be working on a couple of new prints in the empty space. We’ve made a special night/atmosphere/dark nostalgia/soundscapes playlist that we will be listening to (loudly) during the project. The playlist features our catalogues of Burial, Tim Hecker, Forest Swords and some songs from Radiohead, Vector Lovers, and How to Dress Well. After each session, we will post our progress.

***Update: See our progress from our first woodcutting session here.

Collagraphs by Peter Marcus

One of the visual highlights of SGC was Peter Marcus’ exhibition of large scale collagraphs. Check out the dimensions of these prints; they are absolutely stunning to see in person.  Browse a gallery of his prints here.

Swoon sightings in St. Louis

This year’s Southern Graphics conference attendees were able to enjoy Swoon’s just-larger-than-life relief portraits in a refreshing non-gallery setting. The print of the children (pictured below on Cherokee St. in St. Louis) can also be seen on Israel’s West Bank barrier. The only other print we were able to locate was created specifically for SGC. See last year’s Swoon post for more information about this NYC-based artist!

SGC St. Louis

Dan and I are up in St. Louis this week for the 2011 Southern Graphics Conference. This is the largest gathering of printmakers in the country. We are looking to learn some new techniques, meet some fellow printmakers, and show some work. Above is our amazing St. Louis printmaking custom t-shirt along with the bag we received at check in. I’m showing a print over at Tom Huck’s studio, Evil Prints, with the Dirty Printmakers of America. We’re stoked and ready for all the action to start up tomorrow.
