Journey Into the Woods

A little context...

She stands bewildered by this man-made utopia

Had a wonderful photo-hunting nature exploration session yesterday with Surfwacoette, Julia. We shot through several rolls of 35mm film and exposed several Polaroids. The highlight of the trip was the discovery of a giant concrete custom skate pool in the middle of the woods by a small pond. It gets better…we then uncovered an abandoned mausoleum of skate decks and paraphernalia set within a mini cabin. Continuing on, we discovered a small village of isolated cabins big enough for at least a half dozen close friends. We both decided that our lives were just made a little bit more uncool and we must meet the founders of this sweet, secret skate utopia. Shots of our discoveries via Polaroid and iPhone are below. 35mmers to come once they get developed. Individual Polaroid scans to come soon…

A Visit to BlackHare Letterpress Studio

Surfwacoposter

BlackHare Studio

BlackHare Studio 1

I went for a very exciting visit to BlackHare Studio last week for some lessons in letterpress. My goal was to produce some personal business cards. With the help of VGreen Design, I came out with hundreds of cards and a handful of one-of-a-kind monotype letterpress prints.

An impressive collection of metal and wood type of all shapes and sizes

BlackHare Studio 3

A vast collection of wood furniture

The studio was located in a downtown strip and was fully equipped with several large letterpress units. I printed my business cards on a small, but effective table top press.

I blind debossed my logo into my cards first using custom photo polymer plates. I printed my cards three-up on a page to save time with printing.

I hand set all of the letters and numbers on my card…three times…using a modern sans serif typeface (Spartan).

I printed the rest of my information with a blue-green ink.

The cards were then cut down to the standard 3.5″ x 2″ size using a large papercutter.

After my cards were finished, we printed a handful of letterpress monotypes using an old U.S. Feed sign and some brayers on one of the large Vandercook presses.

I then dove into BlackHare’s collection of orphan type drawers to create an original letterpress poster for Surfwaco.

If you’re a fan of printmaking and graphic design, I suggest a visit to a letterpress shop. There are a lot of great ones across the country including, one of my favorites, The Firecracker Press in St. Louis, MO.

Moonrise Kingdom, The Best Movie of 2012…so far

My verdict is in. Moonrise Kingdom has stolen my heart. This is one of the best and most original movies of 2012. (Of course, I’m still looking forward to Shut Up and Play the Hits, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hobbit, The Bourne Legacy, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Looper, Argo, Flight, Skyfall, Hyde Park on Hudson, Les Miserables and The Great Gatsby –just to name a few!–). From cinematography, color, dialogue, screenplay, costume, set design, graphic design and music; Moonrise excels. EVERYTHING is manicured and oozes the definitive vision of Wes Anderson. I rank this movie along with my favorite Anderson films (The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums).

Seeing Moonrise twice, gave me the ability to fully appreciate all of the dense detail in the movie that I did not see in my first viewing. You could live in Anderson’s movies. He crafts worlds full of an imaginative real life. Places that glorify everyday objects, colors, people and environments. He bends and weaves his stories through these elements with the end result being a truly real and fantastic experience for his audience.

On the music front, Anderson is a trendsetter. He has the ability to choose the perfect song for the perfect moment in all of his films. The soundtrack to the film is full of fully formed retro classics, children’s songs and an original score by Alexandre Desplat. My favorite musical moments in Moonrise: Sam and Suzy dancing on the beach to Françoise Hardy’s Le Temps de l’Amour, Sam rowing his canoe to Hank William’s Kaw-Liga and the beautifully riveting songs by Choir of Downside School. A new Polaroid onslaught has arrived! All color shots this time documenting Waco structures. View the entire new set over on the Polaroid page.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the lag in my Polaroid shooting/posting. Well, it’s because my camera got busted when coming back from Nawlins right after a choice shooting session. But, all is well thanks to Phototech, wizards of Polaroid Spectra and SX70 camera repair, and the IMPOSSIBLE Project.

Also on the scene was Emily Knighton with her homespun accessories.

A friend referred me to this great collection of large format Kodachromes from the early 1940s. I love the color, drama and precision in these photographs. They look like they were shot with digital cameras. I can’t help but think of Mad Men when I look at some of these…need to cut back. Below are some of my favorites. View more after the jump. More Black and White & Color Shots posted

U Parks Bridge

I’ve recently finished shooting my black and white/black frame film pack. The change from color to black and white film was a welcome variation and the black frame displays the shot beautifully. I’ve also posted some color shots taken by a fellow Polaroider. Head over to the Polaroid page to view the full set.
